QUOTATION

"My driving philosophy about making music is that you can reduce it all down to one note if that note is played with the right kind of sincerity."

THE HEART OF THE MATTER

As a life-long guitar player and teacher, I believe that I understand what it takes for people (of any age) to develop their own special talent for music in a positive and rewarding way, whether one is just starting out on a musical journey, or is an already-accomplished prodigy committed to furthering an extraordinary gift.

To start with ... all of my students are unique. This perspective lies at the very heart of my teaching philosophy. A personalized approach to goal setting is very important, as is the flexible selection of study materials and — to a lesser degree — a knowledge of multiple playing styles and a familiarity with various types of guitars.

Once goals have been set, a student's progress can regularly be evaluated during normal lesson time — but I'm a strong believer in letting students build their self-confidence (and enthusiasm for the guitar) by giving them an opportunity to evaluate their own progress while performing at Recital Cafés and other similar venues.

To help enhance my teaching philosophy and thereby my ability to better support my students, I participate in programs like Guitarist For Life ... as well as various Music Festivals and competitions. I also serve the global music community, and post-secondary music students around the world, through my role in defining and launching the The Guitar Foundation.
